Best warm blankets for power cuts

Choose comfortable, reusable layers that earn their place on an ordinary sofa or bed. Existing bedding comes first; new blankets should fill a clear household gap.

Best warm blankets for power cuts: the short answer

For most households, a soft daily blanket is more useful than specialist gear. Buy the light Amazon throw as an extra layer, Bedsure for comfort, or Arcturus for a dense wool feel.

Everyday warmth
  1. 01

Use existing duvets and spare bedding before buying more.

  2. 02

Bedsure is the comfort upgrade, not a certified lower-temperature system.

  3. 03

Arcturus adds size and heft but needs gentler care.

  4. 04

Plan somewhere warmer to go if layers cannot keep the household comfortable.

The best warm blanket may already be at home

For a power cut, start with clean spare duvets, blankets and dry clothing you already own. The UK government’s preparedness list includes warm bedding; it does not require a newly bought technical blanket.

This guide is about comfortable reusable household blankets. A sleeping bag adds an enclosed shape and draught control for overnight use; a compact reflective emergency sheet serves a different, less comfortable role. None is a direct replacement for every other type.

Buy only if there is a clear gap: too few adult-sized layers, nothing washable for the sofa, or a preference for a denser wool blanket. A £24 blanket used every week may offer better value than an expensive item left untouched in an emergency bag. Find related practical purchases in Home & workshop.

What spending more actually changes

The Amazon Basics is the inexpensive extra layer. The Bedsure adds fabric mass and a loftier reverse that many people find more comfortable. The Arcturus changes the feel to dense woven wool and gives more coverage. It is a specialist alternative, not automatically a warmer premium winner.

Blankets work partly by holding still air and reducing heat loss. The Woolmark technical resource explains the role of fibre structure in insulation. That does not establish how cold any particular person can safely sleep under one product.

GSM is grams per square metre. Bedsure’s 220GSM face and 260GSM reverse describe its construction. They are not a TOG rating, and adding them does not produce a temperature limit. None of the three exact blankets has a verified minimum comfort temperature in our evidence.

Coverage also matters. A 150×200cm throw is useful for one adult, but feet, shoulders or sides may become exposed when moving. Measure against the intended person and bed. The Arcturus is approximately 163×224cm; its extra area comes with a roughly 2kg carrying and washing burden.

Wool can still provide some insulation when damp, but a wet blanket is uncomfortable and is not a dependable warmth plan. Keep bedding dry. Water resistance, fire resistance and comfort temperature are separate properties; none of these is a certified fire blanket.

Use bedding as part of a warmer-room plan

Wear dry layers and socks, then add bedding over the whole body rather than only the lap. Choose one occupied room, close curtains and unused doors where appropriate, and avoid blocking ventilation or exits. A mattress or insulated layer underneath matters if moving off the usual bed; a blanket draped on top does little to stop heat loss into a cold floor.

Citizens Advice recommends planning where you could go if the home becomes too cold. Household needs vary with age, mobility, health and climate. Do not interpret a heavier blanket as permission to remain indefinitely in an uncomfortably cold building.

An electric throw requires a suitable working electricity supply. A battery station may run one for a time, but that is a separate load calculation and it does not make ordinary bedding unnecessary. The three products here are passive blankets and need no electricity.

These are adult household recommendations. Infant sleep products and safe infant bedding require separate age-appropriate guidance; large adult throws are not selected for that purpose.

Care and storage affect usefulness

Keep the blanket ready to use, with the delivered care label as the final instruction.

  • Check the fleece labels for wash temperature and gentle drying instructions. Excessive heat can damage or mat synthetic fibres.
  • For Arcturus, air first if needed, spot clean or hand wash gently where practical, and follow the maker’s cool gentle-wash and line-dry guidance. Avoid a harsh agitator.
  • Store completely dry where everyone can find the blankets. Do not compress damp wool or fleece into a sealed emergency box.
  • Keep all bedding away from candles, portable heaters, cooking equipment and hot surfaces. Wool content does not make this blanket a certified fire-protection product.
  • Check coverage, weight and ease of handling with the intended adult before deciding how many blankets the household needs.

How we chose

This guide uses manufacturer construction and care information, exact Amazon UK catalogue checks, qualified textile context, independent qualitative reviews and repeated owner accounts. We have not handled the blankets or measured thermal resistance.

The exact new offers checked on 29 October 2026 were £11.54 for Amazon Basics grey 150×200cm, £24.29 promotional price for Bedsure navy 150×200cm and £34.99 for Arcturus navy 64×88in. All were in stock. Other colours, sizes, countries and later promotions may differ.

Good Housekeeping’s Bedsure family coverage and Outdoor Life’s Arcturus field comparison inform comfort and handling, not a coldest-room ranking. Owner comments recur on softness for fleece and heft for wool; merged size/colour reviews were treated cautiously. The Amazon Basics has less independent product-specific coverage, which is reflected in its modest extra-layer role.

We considered electric blankets and small foil sheets but excluded them from this everyday, unpowered comparison. Existing duvets remain the no-purchase alternative. The AI-generated hero depicts the three material types and colours; it is not proof of thickness, weave or thermal performance.
