Which grit kit should you buy?

A beginner kit should give you coarse grind, medium grind, pre-polish and a true final polish in clearly separable containers. The polish chemistry and stage discipline matter more than a large total weight printed on the listing.

Three sensible starting points

Process matters

The kit cannot fix the batch

Good grit still produces dull or bruised stones if the load, hardness mix or cleaning routine is wrong.

Stage one sets the result

Do not advance a stone merely because seven days have passed. Check it, remove fractured or deeply pitted pieces and repeat with fresh coarse grit until the surface is ready.

Clean as if one grain matters

Wash the barrel, lid, stones, hands and work area between stages. Keep plastic pellets dedicated to the stage in which they were first used because abrasive can embed in them.

Match hardness and fill

Tumble stones of broadly similar hardness and keep the barrel at the maker's intended fill. Add suitable media when the load shrinks so stones roll rather than crash.

How we chose

How we chose

We required a live exact Amazon UK page, all four core stages and enough product detail to distinguish the abrasives or handling format. Manufacturer instructions established MJR's 12,000 aluminium-oxide polish and Polly Plastics' stage sequence; specialist and community sources were used to check the common failure patterns around under-running stage one, mixed hardness and cross-contamination.

The price steps are meaningful rather than automatic quality tiers: MJR is a compact value refill, National Geographic trades up to screw-top storage and a broad capacity claim, and Polly Plastics buys more repeat-batch material. Shropshire Crystals kits were considered, but the live results did not expose a stable exact price and specification combination as clearly. Kits that called a low-grade pre-polish the final polish without naming the abrasive were excluded.

Safety

Handle grit and slurry safely

Silicon carbide and aluminium oxide are fine abrasive powders. Keep them out of lungs, eyes, food areas and plumbing.

  • Avoid raising dust. Work gently in a ventilated area and follow the kit's safety information; eye protection and suitable particulate protection are sensible when measuring fine powder.
  • Keep grit, pellets and slurry away from children and pets. Store every stage sealed and clearly separated.
  • Never pour rock-tumbling slurry down a household drain: it settles and hardens. Let solids settle, decant reusable water where appropriate, and dispose of solids according to local guidance.
  • Unplug the tumbler before opening or cleaning it, and follow the tumbler maker's load and operating instructions rather than a generic grit ratio.
