Best portable toilets for water outages

A waterless bag toilet is often the simpler fallback when water is limited. Compare a basic bucket model, a folding option and a manual-flush toilet, with the supplies and disposal plan each requires.

Which portable toilet is suitable for a water outage?

The best portable toilets for water outages fit both the people using them and a workable waste plan. Choose the Khazi for a simple waterless setup, the Bivvy Loo for folding storage, or the Porta Potti 365 only if you can spare flush water and reach an accepted emptying point.

Choose for your household
  1. 01

A suitable existing toilet lined according to public-health advice can avoid buying another seat; check the local incident instructions first.

  2. 02

Buy compatible liners or tank treatment, handwashing supplies and secure waste containment with the toilet, rather than treating them as optional extras.

  3. 03

Check sitting height and the supplied load limit. None of these is a supported medical commode or a substitute for suitable transfer assistance.

Check whether the toilet, water supply or sewer has failed

Current UK preparedness guidance encourages proportionate household supplies. It does not require every home to buy a portable toilet. A brief supply interruption, a failed sewer and a flooded property call for different responses.

Ask the water or wastewater utility whether the sewer is usable and follow local public-health instructions. Do not keep flushing into a backed-up or damaged system. Washington State Department of Health describes using another working toilet, lining an existing toilet with nested bags, or using a suitable bucket arrangement. Its advice is a useful fallback concept, not automatic permission to put human waste in the ordinary bin where you live.

If your existing toilet can safely be adapted, strong compatible liners, absorbent material and a secure lidded waste container may be all you need. Follow the local setup instructions, particularly if the bowl contains contaminated water or sewage. Avoid improvised unstable seats. Buying a dedicated unit is more useful when another household member needs the bathroom, the existing toilet cannot be adapted safely, or you want a separate cleanable setup.

Before ordering, decide who will change bags or empty the tank, where waste can be temporarily contained and which service will accept it. If the plan cannot be carried out safely, use available functioning facilities or seek local assistance.

Waterless bags and flush tanks solve different problems

Bucket toilet: few parts, frequent handling

The original Khazi collects waste in a removable bucket and has no flush. Practical Motorhome lists a 5-litre capacity. For a waterless household setup, use suitable liners and absorbent material under local instructions; do not assume bags or treatment are supplied. The small bucket needs regular attention and does not represent several days of hands-off capacity. Secure the supplied strengthening brace before use.

Folding toilet: pay to store it flat

CarpLife's green Bivvy Loo packs to about 5 cm thick and opens to only 25 cm high. Its main benefit is compact storage, not a bigger waste allowance or easier standing. The maker lists 12 liner bags, 12 powder sachets and 40 wipes; a rigid lid is separate. Set all four frame hinges correctly before fitting the liner. The maker says the biodegradable bags should be used within nine months of purchase, so they need rotation rather than indefinite emergency storage.

Manual-flush toilet: more familiar, with more obligations

The Porta Potti 365 has a manual piston flush, a 15-litre fresh-water tank, a 21-litre waste tank and a waste-level indicator. No electricity is required, but clean water, suitable toilet treatment and cleaning supplies are. Follow Thetford's dosing and preparation instructions; there is no universal fluid recipe. Its approximately 41 cm overall height may be more useful than the Bivvy Loo's very low seat, provided the user can sit and rise safely.

A 21-litre waste tank can contain roughly 21 kg of liquid before the tank's own weight. Empty earlier if that is too much to lift. A larger nominal tank does not remove the need for timely emptying or provide a predictable number of household days. Do not fill every available tank simply because it has that capacity.

The consumables are part of the purchase

For a bag system, budget for compatible strong liners, the specified absorbent or gelling material, toilet paper, spare containment bags and a robust lidded holding container. Plan around actual household use and change bags according to the system's instructions and condition; 12 supplied bags are not a guarantee of 12 days. Seal them before they become overfull or too heavy to handle. Powder may bind liquid or reduce odour; it does not sterilise human waste.

For the Thetford, use suitable tank treatment at its label dose, appropriate rapidly dissolving toilet paper and the cleaning products specified by the manufacturer. The current manual explains tank preparation, blade operation and emptying. Keep wet wipes and liners out of the tank unless the exact instructions explicitly permit them; wipes should not be flushed into a sewer either. Do not mix cleaning chemicals or pour household bleach into a system containing toilet fluid or waste.

Set up a separate handwashing point with clean water, soap and a way to dry hands. CDC guidance advises at least 20 seconds of soap-and-water washing after toilet use and before handling food. Hand sanitiser alone does not work well against norovirus. Reserve water for hygiene even when choosing a waterless toilet.

Use suitable gloves for waste handling and cleaning, remove them carefully and wash hands afterwards. Clean contaminated surfaces promptly with a product compatible with the toilet and effective for the intended use, following its label. Keep toilet supplies and waste away from food preparation, children and animals.

Agree a disposal route before the first use

Bagged human waste and liquid chemical-toilet waste may require different collection routes. Ask your local public-health or municipal waste service what packaging and temporary storage it accepts during an outage. Keep sealed bags in secure secondary containment, away from children, pets, food and water sources, while awaiting the accepted collection route. Do not assume the normal household rubbish service will accept them.

Empty a tank only at a designated facility that accepts its contents and treatment chemicals. Thetford's manual directs users to an authorised waste-disposal point. Confirm access and permission; an ordinary road gully or storm drain is not a substitute. Ask the operator before using a septic system, because treatment compatibility and local restrictions vary.

Do not empty waste onto the ground, into surface water or into an unapproved drain. Do not treat “biodegradable” or “compostable” bag wording as permission to bury human waste or add it to a home compost heap. Environment Agency guidance for England points to purpose-designed foul-sewer disposal sites and shows that even limited burial arrangements have specific conditions. Those England-only rules are not a worldwide household disposal method. Follow the instructions for your country and the particular incident.

Stop using a setup if waste cannot be contained or collected safely, or if a household member cannot use it without a fall or hygiene risk. A more expensive toilet cannot fix an unavailable disposal service.

Check stability and the height you can use

Try the clean assembled seat on a level, firm surface before an emergency. Do not stand on lids, lean heavily sideways or raise a low toilet on an improvised platform. People needing arm supports or help transferring should arrange suitable equipment and assistance rather than rely on a camping toilet.

Thetford's current support and manual state 120 kg for normal use. CarpLife claims its steel frame supports over 150 kg, but follow the limit printed on the exact supplied unit if it differs. For Khazi, the specialist retailer lists 150 kg; we could not verify that against a current manufacturer manual. Confirm the supplied limit and brace instructions before relying on it, especially for a user near a stated limit. None of these figures is an independent stability test.

After use, empty, clean and dry the equipment as instructed. Thetford requires both tanks to be drained for long storage and recommends seal maintenance. Check liners and powder periodically rather than storing them indefinitely in a damp shed.

How we chose and what the evidence can show

This is a research-led buying guide, with no original use, load, odour or hygiene tests. We checked exact ASINs, live purchase options, manufacturer instructions, qualified public-health guidance, specialist retail documentation and independent editorial coverage. The Kampa's lower price tier describes a basic system; its checked marketplace price is relatively high for that simplicity, so a suitable existing setup may be better value.

Practical Motorhome's comparison covers the original Khazi and Porta Potti 365; it is an editorial selection, not proof that either was tested by this site. Multiple Bivvy Loo owners at Berger describe easy pack-down and useful portability while flagging the low position. The retailer's load wording differs from the maker's, reinforcing the need to follow supplied instructions. Owner feedback cannot establish safe waste treatment or suitability for mobility needs.

We did not add an electric-flush model or a larger permanent composting system for a short outage. No directly matching The Hobby Library household activity was found. The generated hero represents the three toilet formats; frame geometry, capacity and load performance must come from the product documentation.
