Best head torches for home emergencies
Compare three head torches for home emergencies, from a simple AAA backup to adjustable beams and a rechargeable pack with spare-battery fallback.

Quick answer
Best head torches for home emergencies: the quick answer
The best head torches for home emergencies put light where you look while leaving both hands free. The Tikkina is enough for most household tasks. The Spot 400 earns its extra cost with dimming and separate beam choices. The Actik Core suits regular users who want an included rechargeable battery and AAA fallback.
- 01
Choose the Tikkina for a straightforward light to share with someone who will not remember a complex button sequence.
- 02
Choose the Spot 400 if continuous dimming and a close-range beam matter more than having USB charging included.
- 03
Choose the Actik Core if you will recharge and use it regularly. Keep three AAA spares for an outage and check the supplied pack’s charging connector.
The picks
The researched shortlist
These are exact Amazon UK source listings. Prices and stock were checked on 29 October 2026 and vary by seller, delivery address and country. Any offer at purchase takes precedence.
Petzl Tikkina 300 head torch, black
Best for: Readers wanting simple controls and inexpensive replaceable power
One button and three white levels cover basic household jobs without paying for extra modes. Petzl specifies 100 lumens for 10 hours on alkaline AAA, followed by reserve lighting; that is a declining-output test, not ten hours of fixed 100-lumen light. The seven-lumen mode is for very close work. Spend more only if you need dimming, red light or an included rechargeable pack.
- Simple single-button operation is easy to explain
- Three AAA cells can be replaced without a charging supply
- Optional CORE pack lets frequent users add rechargeable power later
- No red mode or continuous brightness adjustment
- Rechargeable operation costs extra
- Battery compartment and tilt mechanism need careful handling
- Lowest checked new price has a later third-party delivery window
Black Diamond Spot 400 head torch, Octane
Best for: People who want to dim the beam for reading, packing and helping someone
The improvement over Tikkina is control: a proximity beam and continuous dimming reduce the need to tolerate a brighter preset. Black Diamond rates the AAA medium mode at 200 lumens for five hours; its 200-hour headline is at six lumens. CleverHiker found the 400 comfortable and versatile, but needed practice with its two-button interface and accidentally triggered full power through PowerTap. Learn that before relying on it.
- Dimming and a separate proximity mode suit close household tasks
- Red light and brightness memory reduce unnecessary full-power use
- AAA operation avoids relying on a sealed battery
- Controls and the touch-sensitive boost area require practice
- No charging kit is included
- Six-lumen low-mode runtime is not a working-brightness figure
Petzl Actik Core rechargeable head torch, black
Best for: A regularly used head torch that can also serve during an outage
The premium buys the removable rechargeable pack in the box, a mixed beam for looking farther ahead and a red mode. It does not buy longer standard-mode runtime: Petzl specifies 100 lumens for seven hours on CORE, versus ten hours on AAA, with fading and reserve lighting. The three-level design is simpler than fine dimming but less flexible. Its higher maximum is rarely necessary in a house.
- Included rechargeable pack saves buying it separately
- Three AAA batteries provide a practical fallback
- Mixed beam, red mode and lockout add useful versatility
- Only three white presets; no continuous dimming
- More expensive than Tikkina plus spare AAA cells
- Retailer charging-port copy conflicts with current manufacturer documentation
Useful light lasts less than the headline suggests
Useful light lasts less than the headline suggests
Petzl’s current Tikkina chart gives 300 lumens for 2.5 hours on AAA, but 100 lumens for 10 hours. The Actik Core chart separates rechargeable-pack and AAA performance; its highest AAA output is lower than with CORE. Black Diamond’s long low-mode figure is six lumens. These are different brightness levels, so compare the setting you will actually use.
ANSI runtime ends well below initial brightness. A reserve mode may help you find replacement cells; it is not equivalent to continuing your task at the original output. Aim the beam down for close work, especially when speaking to someone, and carry a separate handheld light if you need to point independently of your gaze.
Which upgrades can wait
Which upgrades can wait
The rechargeable Spot 400-R was considered but gives up ordinary AAA fallback and uses a different charging arrangement. Sealed ultralight headlamps can be good everyday lights, but an emergency drawer is a strong use case for replaceable cells. A powerful, heavy specialist headlamp is unnecessary for reading labels, moving around the home and carrying supplies.
Several older head-torch reviews remain searchable under current product names. We did not apply a 2018 Spot runtime result to the Spot 400, or a 250-lumen Tikkina chart to the 300-lumen model. Owner reports about older Black Diamond latch designs were treated as background, not evidence that the current pick has the same fault.
The Astro 300 was also checked: its £22.99 offer had the same later delivery, while the £36 earlier new offer saved little against the Spot 400. It did not improve the overall shortlist at those prices.
Make it easy to find and operate
Make it easy to find and operate
A head torch is most useful when everyone knows where it is and how to switch it on.
- Test fit, tilt and controls before storing it. Leave printed instructions beside unfamiliar lockout controls.
- Store complete matching spare AAA sets. Do not mix old and new cells or different chemistries in one set.
- Charge removable lithium packs with their specified cable and power supply, and keep damaged packs out of use.
- Do not use a head torch as permission to tackle live wiring, enter floodwater or approach a suspected gas leak.

This is desk research, with no hands-on testing by The Consumer Library. Manufacturer documentation anchors specifications; named independent reviewers supply their own observations. Owner comments help identify recurring usability issues, but cannot establish failure rates or certify performance. Retailer ratings can combine colours, revisions and older products. We compared the alternatives discussed in this guide and selected products for a specific job at their checked prices.
